Wednesday Wanderlust

A look I've been wanting to master that I've spotted recently gracing street-style blogs/magazines etc. is something like what these ladies are sporting, and outlined by this little formula I've created.

closed collar long sleeve shirt

cozy sweater    +
maxi flowy skirt
 =
boho meets uptown prep a la Alexa Chung

I love the contrast between the almost too stuffy prim sweater/shirt combination and the bohemian flair of the long free-flowing skirt. The brooch the woman to the right is wearing adds that neccesary grandma edge.

Some musical inspiration for this Wednesday: Machu Picchu from The Stroke's somewhat newly released and much awaited album entitlled Angles.

Wild Child

Coming off of a clazy clazy (that's crazy with an undefinable accent that manifests itself in my life occasionally) week, I was so inspired by the Nowness video that the Man Repeller posted (see it here) to really work on injecting more colors, confidence and zutzpa into my everyday look. (Iris Apfel!) I mean, why wear black eyelashes when you could wear orange? As youths I think we can learn so much from our older relatives and friends-they have such vast treasure troves of sartorial wisdom. Taking this all into consideration, I've picked a few of my favorite vibrant pieces that might not make their way into our closests, but certainly in our minds and hearts for some crazy inspiration.

Early Spring Favorites

 1. These cat eye glasses I snagged from a Forever 21 outlet for $5 are my recent obsession. I wear them almost every day, they are so fabulous and unique not only for spring but any time/anywhere.
 2. Wooden soled and heeled shoes are super chic while at the same time being organic and wholesome. I am obsessing over this nude tweed-esque pair I bought over the weekend that I can wear with almost anything. Another favorite wooden shoe right now that I need to attain : clogs.
3. High waisted shorts in bright colors are breezy and simple while at the same time very modern. I got this electric blue pair from urban outfitters and the color feels especially fresh for this time of year.

4. DENIM and I mean denim everything. Don't stop yourself at jeans, denim shirts are the business right now along with vests, jackets, and shorts. Here I wear my two favorite denim pieces, though I usually do not layer them in this fashion I felt it was necessary to depict my point. The vest is a somewhat recent thrift find and the shirt is a classic staple I've had for so long I can't even remember where it came from.  All you need to know is that these get more use than most things in my closet, and that's really saying something.  Canadian tuxedo anyone? I know I've worn them countless times.

tralala spring has sprung... almost.

Hair Lines, Shadows and Conviction

This is a backstage look at Chanel's spring 2011 beauty inspiration. I loved what Peter Philips said about making a look your own. I wish I could be cool enough to casually leave the house with my hairline colored in.

Bill's the Man

I'm fully willing and hopefully will be able to make a pilgrimage to the Nuart theater in L.A. the nanosecond that the Bill Cunningham New York documentary comes out. A legendary enigma in the fashion industry, Mr. Cunninggham is the first true street style photographer to exist. With two columns in the New York Times, he has influenced fashion in a completley unique way.

Here's the trailer:

" I won't just be a puppet on a string "

Zara is a definite go-to spot for current looks at comparatively low prices, and although I have to trek about 40 minutes to my nearest Zara, I always see many lust-worthy pieces. Here are some of my favorite looks.

CoCo

These are both completely unrelated, but I'm just going to go for it anyway.

One of my mom's friends (she has no daughters unfortunately) bought me this book on a whim last week. It's not really something I would typically read, however I have become completely obsessed with it, religiously reading it every chance I get. Though CoCo, who I discovered was actually named Gabrielle (!!!), lived quite the dramatic life she really is a woman with a strength and voice I aspire to be. I now know that it's literally impossible for anyone to claim that what they wear was not a result of the styles of Chanel - the woman practically invented jersey which is all that "american sportswear" is. I will forever bow down to Ms. Chanel as one of my biggest heroes of all time. Go read this book.

I am just overall loving this fish eye photo from Paris FW. It's actually cold in most places still and I tend to forget that while I'm tanning on my balcony every afternoon. I am still in need of a cape, though I wont be able to use it for probably 6 months, and both of these ladies seem to have the cape-wearing technique down to an art.

Goodbye now...

"I'll just take my ego for a walk."

I have returned! After being a total zombie all weekend due to a nasty cold, I'm back in the blogosphere. I apologize for my lengthy absence, and hope to compensate. In my sickness yesterday I had the time to see the totally brill classic An Affair to Remember. Although I had seen bits of it ages ago, I had never fully absorbed the greatness. It's sarcastic yet appropriately sappy, super witty and corny at the same time.  It's one of my mother's favorites, and even my 5 year old sister thoroughly enjoyed it. Not more than 15/20 minutes into the film do we get to see Deborah Kerr's super glamorous and exquisite gown.
There's just too much to love-the intricate woven effect on the corset, interesting color combination and cascading fabric down her back. And I love how this is what one wore just to go to dinner.

While we're in a Cary Grant mood. . .

Why is he so perfect?

Moats and Boats and Waterfalls

Just two things I've found and loved quite a while ago that just never seemed to get old. I try and stay current, but this is worth it.
Kelly from one of my favorite blogs The Glamourai posted this look and I was completely obsessed with it. I saw an identical skirt at Zara a few weeks ago and immediately thought of her. I like how she is standing so still and perfect amidst such a hectic place and how the angle gives her stance a really unique  relaxed feel.
This was all I listened to last summer, however I only recently saw the video on my stumbleupon and, though it is a little bit too "hipster" in its fake vintage effects, I really enjoyed it. It puts me in the perfect mood for spring, love, and all other cliche words that go along with those. Simply stated, "home is whenever I'm with you."

ciao,
Gabriella

Sunny Saturdays and Red Riding Hood

Girl crush on Amanda Seyfried (ever since her days as Karen) and I'm loving the styling in this Marie Claire UK shoot. Today will consist of tanning in preparations for the white dress I will be wearing to prom in two weeks. Happy saturday lovers.

Lurving Lanvin

I just came across this neat "backstage-pass" video from http://www.style.com/ covering the Fall 2011 line from Lanvin. There's interviews with Alber Elbaz, who I feel would be such a cool person to meet as well as a couple seconds of Anna Dello Russo and George Cortina who are regulars on the Sartorialist. View it here.

Some of my most favorite looks from the line. . .

Paris FW

Since it is Paris Fashion Week I'm going to get all stereotypical and express to you my French knowledge, or lack there of. First, both of these girls are just epitomes in my mind of Frenchies with the outlandish sophisticated style and the attitude that is sheer perfection. (I actually have been to Paris before and I will admit that this first fact is the truth.)

Second, this song is from MK and Ashley's Passport to Paris AND 127 Hours (James Franco had nothing to do with the french but I recently saw it and bought the soundtrack). I am considering translating the lyrics, but I kind of enjoy singing along and not knowing what any of it means, I feel like that's the American way to do things. Ignore the super weird video, music from 1977 is hard to come by on youtube.

Oh and to end on an even happier note, this is just the epitome of us.

Anna is my Hero

After an extremely frustrating shopping day yesterday (looking for a relatively inexpensive, timeless, non-cheesy prom dress=next to impossible) I found myself in need of some serious sartorial inspiration. Alas, I didn't have to look any further than Tommy Ton's fab blog. Isn't it a great moment when you realize why you fell in love with fashion in the first place?

Coral, pink, yellow and orange in a sea of navy, black, gray and beige.

Leave it to Anna Dello Russo to get me out of a fashion rut. Fearless, irreverent and always herself; she continually gives us reasons to adore her. I love the fact that even though it's probably rather chilly in Milan, she exudes tropical elegance in Jil Sander and Prada sunglasses.

Taking to the Streets

I'm backkkk! Marisa and I have been pretty inconsistent with our postings lately, life/travels/school has been hectic at best. However, I have returned just in time for Paris Fashion Week! Well, I'm not actually there but I am exceptionally excited about it as I am for every fashion week every year. Last night I had a dream that I was a street style photographer, I wish I was kidding but alas I am not. So I think I have found my calling? Maybe? Probably not, but I think I will post some of my most recent street faves (not taken by me) in leu of that dream of mine. Happy Saturday my loves!

Omg Oxfords

While perusing the spring J. Crew catalog I came across these oxfords. I'm instantly obsessed with anything liberty floral, and have worn my oxfords from Zara probably a thousand times, so the combination of these two is beyond for me. I think they are gorgeous enough to frame. . . but that would kind of defeat the purpose. I feel like you could even re-lace them with gold satin ribbon to make them extra special.

Don't they kind of remind you of shoes Marie Antoinette would wear if she lived in our time?

Shock and Awe

Here are some Fall 2011 looks I'm inspired by that don't sound great theoretically but             are surprisingly bananas.

Norma Kamali via http://www.style.com/
Kind of outrageous on paper (a lace bodysuit with super flared legs) but so cool in actuality

Marni via The Sartorialist
I love the muted but rich color combination. . .a two-tone fur coat that visually makes sense-who knew?

Jil Sander via http://www.style.com/
The idea of head-to-toe floral is crazy-town but here it comes across so seamlessly old lady-chic

Targay? No Way.

Last week, my mother surprised me with these brown leather wedges. With straps I've been lusting after, a zipper in the back, and a super comfortable sole, they are pretty much my ideal shoe. And here's the extra tidbit that makes them that much more desirable: they hail from the humble ailes of Target. I repeat, Target. The multimillion dollar company/super-store that sells paper towels, frozen pizza and lamps, all at the same time. I. Know. How. Crazy.

I've already paired them with socks and worn them with jeans which is a testament to their complete wearability. They are also totally easy to walk in. This concludes my plug for purchasing shoes from places that also sell laundry detergent.
