Modern Marvel

I love breaking fashion rules. White in november? Who cares. A shapeless button down on a girly dress? I love it. Style isn't about trying to be someone you're not by sticking to trends and rules, it's about showing the world who you are in something that makes you feel confident and beautiful. Rules aren't always meant to be followed, and to quote my Good Earth Vanilla Chai tea bag I had last week, "The free thinking of one generation is the common sense of the next".  Do what you want, be glamorous in your own way, and love what you wear as essentially an expression of yourself. If you get anything out of this blog, I hope you know that when it come to fashion the most important thing is to be yourself - a real woman makes her own rules.
Just a thought for tonight,
G

I am Love-ing Jil Sander

Two of my favorite looks from the film

So I finally had time to sit down and watch I am Love with my mother night before last after wanting to see it and hearing all about it from a good friend. . .Oh. My. Goodness. Gosh. Gracious. I have never seen a movie more beautifully made, aesthetically thrilling or more visually delightful. The cinematography was incredible. I'm listening to the soundtrack as I'm writing this and it is beyond inspiring. When it first came out, I saw tons of articles buzzing about the amazing wardrobe and the always talented Tilda Swinton, and after having seen it about 6 months after the fact, (my delayed viewing mostly due to the R rating) I feel a need to accumulate an all Jil Sander wardrobe. The impeccable lines, vibrant colors and classic silohuettes are completley enviable and flattering. With regards to the R-ness. . .my mom and I were able to skip through because we ordered it on Netflix so I can't vouch for those bits. The essential message is that of Tilda's character's liberation, and throughout the entire  movie, the audience is able to  visually experience each step in that transformation through her clothing. The ending is breathtaking but I won't spoil it for those who haven't yet been able to see it. . .I wholeheartedly recommend experiencing this!

It's Still On With Alexa Chung

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! It's not a secret that I am obsessed with Alexa Chung and have been ever since summer '09 when her show first aired (my heart broke when it was canceled after only two seasons). British model turned TV personality turned designer, she is one of the coolest, funniest, and most successful people in fashion right now. Most recently she is designing and modeling for Madewell (the ads are everywhere and so cute, I smile every time I see them...), and when I saw these in the UK Elle from November I was so excited! If you don't already know her look up her interview with Jason Schwartzman and you will become her #1 fan (and his as well).
xxoo.

Meisterwerke

In this Oct. 2010 Vogue Germany issue I could not help but fall completely in love with all of the modern monarchial beauty. Model Anja Rubik embodies all that is pure with her angelic face yet adds a spunky and whimsical aspect with her flamboyant dresses, skirts, blouses, and facial expressions. She looks like a rebellious princess that we cannot help but love and aspire to be. Its title Meisterwerke, German for masterpiece, could not be any more fitting.

I Truly Heart Lanvin Like No Other

LANVIN FOR H&M (yes this really is happening)
I'm sure this isn't the first nor last time you will be hearing about H & M's collaboration with much-coveted and much-adored French label Lanvin. Alas, my sentiments must be expressed on this beyond exciting line.So here are just a few of the looks I'm simply fixated on. . .The whimsical ruffles and bejewled neckline are to-die-for on the first dress. The sheer neckline and dramatic skirt on the second is romantic, yet accesible. And this last dress manages to pack a dramatic punch with the shoulders while remaining classic.
Before you've arranged your overnight stay in front of your local H & M on the 23thrd to ensure the chance to snag some of this glamour, be sure to check out the beyond fabulous promo linked below.

Ps. It has actually been cool in Ventura County lately and fall is finally showing itself. The feeling of this song expresses the season to a T.

Voila! Velvet.

Julia Hafstrom kills it in this new issue of Harper's Bazaar UK. What I would give for that porcelain skin and the blue flower multi textured Roland Mouret dress in the second photo (I seriously need to get my hands on something like it for my senior prom in April). My hair is red right now but nothing like hers which I am absolutely loving, especially with those bangs.

Cerulean

Two posts in one day, but such a good scene. Anyway, happy two week anniversary :) ! Thanks to everyone who has been so supportive throughout this whole process. We are the first to admit that it is most definitely a work in progress and we're still trying to figure this all out as we go along. Love you all!

Lindy or Voila?

During my monthly perusal of J. Crew's catalog, (which always makes me want to create a collage for my inspiration board) I spotted these to-die-for Lindy Platform Peep Toes. The color is called "Warm Taupe" which seems to beg for grey or burgundy tights. Considering the price tag. . .which is not within a non-job-holding student's budget. . .I sighed a envious sigh and went on with my mostly non-heel wearing life. (Because who really wears heels everyday. . . except for Anna Dello Russo who is beyond fabulous)
But while I was browsing on Forever 21's website a few days ago I stumbled upon these surprisingly sophisticated and chic cut-out heels that strike a resemblance to the Lindy heels. I'm obsessed with the zipper detailing and the taupe color would fit in nicely with a multitude of looks. So maybe this is a lesson in forming less rash/impulsive shoe-buying habits and not splurging right away? Regardless, feel free to take your pick: Splurge for $265? Or Save for $26.80?

A Dogs Life

I know I'm super late, but this blog wasn't created when I originally got the November Vogue. Two words: Patrick Demarchelier. A lot of people have lost faith in American Vogue because it does fail in comparison to its European counterparts photography wise. However, the most recent Vogue (which should still be on shelves if I am not mistaken) was on another level. The cover is Anne Hathaway (who looks absolutely insane in an Audrey Hepburnesque shoot) and I especially loved the garden party themed piece with the dogs and teased hair featured below. It was so classic yet at the same time very fashion forward and edgy - a combination that is hard to come by. The freckles on the male on the left,  tony award winning British actor Eddie Redmayne, add a youthful boyish charm that I am absolutely obsessed with. Bravo American Vogue. So classy.

Sorry if the quality isn't top notch.
I scanned these directly from the magazine which was a task in itself.

Unequivocally Audrey

So borrowing a little inspiration from an Audrey Hepburn classic (Roman Holiday here) certainly isn't a terribly unique idea, but if we take a moment to analyze Audrey's look it truly is incredibly timeless and special. I love the romantic concept of the gradual transformation her appearance takes on throughout the movie as she becomes less inhibited, and more like herself. The simple clean lines and cuffed sleeves of Audrey's blouse are both incorporations easily made into everyone's method of dressing. The perfect cinched waist is a universally flattering option that in my opinion should be more frequently seen. The longer skirt is another rare commodity these days that deserves the spotlight more often than it has. Those authentic sandals Audrey picks up from a street vendor add a casual, effortless element that is forever in vogue. The thought of gallavanting through Rome on a Vespa never loses its charm either.  And I feel I would be remiss in not adding a few words about how incredibly charming Gregory Peck is throughout the film-and how that extremley deep man voice would sound awkward on anyone else.

Perfection that is Paul & Joe

So we were going through all of the collections now that fashion week is completely done with (school had sadly gotten in the way of us being completely up to date day to day), and we have to say one of our favorites was Paul & Joe Spring 2011. The looks that Sophie Albou put together for this season are so wearable and girly that I can't help but swoon over the patterns and high waists. We're huge proponents of the big plastic framed glasses and the addition to the already impeccable designs was truly the icing on the cake. Tres tres chic

InspiRED

When I think of one thing every girl needs, immediately one item comes to my mind: a red pair of shoes. Personally, I own three pairs, two different heels and a pair of suede flats much like the ones Marisa wears below. Here, a more subtle black dress with a denim shirt on top keep things simple while the shoes add a little spark and chic element while still remaining casual. I recently read an article in Elle explaining how despite tough economic times, women are still buying just as many shoes as ever, if not more. Physiologists target it as a coping mechanism for women who are struggling financially or emotionally and it's been proven to make women actually feel happier overall in all aspects of their lives. So there you have it, cope and go buy some red suede shoes. It's science. S'later.

Sweaters, Trousers and Bling Ohh My.

This cooler weather appropriate look mixes the inherent sophisticated feel of these perfect trousers with luxe jewelry for an overall modern and mature expression. The cozy cashmere blend turtleneck (an original Rockport sweater borrowed from Dad) adds just enough warmth without detracting from the chic factor. I'm obsessed with this necklace from Madewell via my mother's jewelry box. The addition of dark heels prevents the look from verging anywhere near the much-feared frump zone.

Everybody's Making Faces In The Dark

On tuesday night I hit up The Music Box at the Fonda to see Generationals and Two Door Cinema Club with Jamie. It was definitely a memorable night all around and we actually danced despite the interesting crowd of west hollywooders pushing us around as they videotaped the entire concert on their iphones (we especially despise people who do that, by the way). Generationals were good (we enjoyed the more acoustic songs such as Trust featured below) and Two Door was also, especially with such a fiery ginger as the lead singer (check the link below as well). Both of these bands were on another level and only $20 to be 20 feet away. So yeah, overall success.

(This photo is a joke.)
We were sweating and overly excited hence the comically huge smiles.
Sadly, this is the only picture of us that I have from this night.

A Certain Romance

Going off of the general fall theme we had in the last post, Marisa and I are really trying to express our infatuation with cool colors this season. Mix different textures (here: leather, wool, jersey cotton) of more neutral shades like white, grey, navy, olive, or beiges for a really polished overall feel. Most of us are tempted to turn to super comfy sloppy outfits on cool days, but by mixing some more neutral and comfortable pieces of different textures we can all avoid that. This look also has some dramatic and romantic aspects with the rose headband and jewelry that really add an element of sophistication, something I know every girl wants.
ps. tomorrow I'm going to a Two Door Cinema Club concert at the Music Box. Be expecting a post in the days to come with my experience http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r45ZHB1hxfI"
