Whirling Wednesday Faves

Here is just a brief smattering of things I'm inspired by on this fine Wednesday.

Because, you know a Barbie-pink swath of fur is always essential

My dad's old ski sunglasses which I wish I could wear in daily life

Almost Mad Men, yet totally modern

Jaunty Jackets in February

I was originally going to just post these two looks because I simply adored them both, but I suddenly realized they share a similar statement piece that I sub consciously was drawn to (yes, I do know that Freud has nothing to do with fashion but bear with me). Both girls wear thick yet moveable wrap jackets that are effortless and cozy, not too much structure while at the same time not being too cape-like. Maybe a little light weight for those parts of the world being obliterated by winter storms right now, but in good ol' Southern Cal it's a nice 60 degrees with some wind, perfect for both of these jackets.

This whole "ending a post with a song" thing has become somewhat of a habit for me if you have not noticed, and the main reason for this is  that my life is not all fashion all the time and thus this blog is not either (that's right ladies and gents, I do enjoy other things as well, it is shocking). Heard this one on my favorite music blog The Music IV and I'm sure it will bring a smile to your face, as Bishop Allen always does. I'm off to the wind chilled tundra that is Chicago now in search of some kind of direction in making the decision that will affect my life for the next four years.  I'm usually a pretty decisive person, but trust me college decisions throw all you thought you knew about yourself out the window. If only the plane could divert and take me to NYC for fashion week. Thus is the story of my sad life.

Erin Will Bring Out the NYC Girl Within

After seeing these out-of-sight (apologies for the 70's cliche) wedges by Loeffler Randall Erin (done for a collaboration for Suno NY) in several magazines I felt I had to post about them.

the straps!

the gladiator/snake-like cut-outs!
the chunky, solid heel and crazy hallucinogenic-induced pattern!
Seriously how much do want these things? I have to be honest, when I saw that they were Loeffler Randall I was a little shocked because the label is so known for classic, great quality leather boots that I continuously covet.

Oh and guess what's happening in less than 4 days? Yipeeee NY fashion week. The only reason there isn't a thousand exclamation marks after that is because unfortunately I live far, far away from NYC in a place called the West Coast, with no immediate access to the front rows of Marni, Alexander McQueen, Celine,Marc Jacobs, DVF, Erdem, Chanel, Jason Wu, Isabel Marant, or Jil Sander. I'm also not Tavi Gevinson, Anna Wintour or Grace Coddington. . . in case that's something you were questioning. But there's always style.com for the far-flung obsessed, I suppose. Sigh.

Just Like I Like it

Going to get a little risque right now and post this video. Such a hysterical song by french bad The Teenagers that I have been obsessed with forever, introduced to me by my friend Jamie. It's not really the song that's the focus right now, but the video is literally perfection. When the girls are jumping on the bed in the girly overalls and blouses, throwing the pom poms in the air, one can not help but fall in love. And the moment when they all slowly turn around and look at the camera! I die every time, so perfect. Such beauty in the simplicity, and I love how they make fun of Americans. I wish I could say it wasn't true.

I don't know about you guys, but I usually read the comments on YouTube videos because more often than not they are hysterical. Someone wrote, and I quote, "Once again french people come to nail your daughters". Brilliance.

Celine, You're Obscene(ly cool)

Again, apologies for the belated post. (I don't wish to bore you with the reality of my adolescent existence) Anywho, after seeing this ad in a magazine recently, I coveted these Céline sunnies even more than I already did. I'm getting a bit stream-of-consciousness here but I'm currently reading Jane Eyre for school and everytime Rochester's pesky ex-mistress Celine is brought up, I think of this label and how effortlessly cool everything from it is . I also think of how effortlessly cool anyone/everyone would look with these sunglasses. (there's your healthy dose of literary reference for the day)

I'm also wanting the tortoise-shell version

Definitley takes a certain face shape to pull off. . .runs the risk of being a little John Lennon-esque but alas they are still beyond the beyond

this creamy eggshell/blush shade is bananas

Happy weekend kids.

Shades of Time

Two essential things that must be addressed from these Allure photos...
1. Color. I am loving the rich bold colors and billowy structures. I am also on a constant quest for more voluminous hair, and this model seems to have achieved it beautifully. Eccentricity really is key right now and lately my tendency has been to move towards the bright/avant-garde/expressive colors and textures that can really make a statement.
2. 70's inspiration. I always claimed I was born in the wrong era fashion wise (Miniver Cheevy, born too late if you catch my drift), but I've recently realized how lucky we really are to have so many eras behind us to draw inspiration from and incorporate into individualized modern looks. I often like to create a new kind of "persona" per say when I get dressed each morning, telling myself that I want to be a 40's girl for the day, or a grungy punk rocker of the late 20th century, or in this case an outlandish 70's diva; it's really up to you how you pull in inspiration and incorporate the things you love from the past into your style.

Just some thoughts on this thursday,
G

Whether You're High or Low

As if I didn't love Janelle Monáe enough as it is because of her total commitment to retro androgyny, this video for Tightrope just sends me over the edge. This song has been on repeat on my iPod for a good two weeks, and I love the escapist/mental institution/jazz vibe this video explores. On a more sartorial note, I am super jealous of her impeccable high waisted cropped pants and perfect blazer.
